What does it mean when someone asks during pillow talk “whatcha thinking”

Ok we’ve all been there many time.

You’re sitting laid up post-coital and your partner says “what are you thinking about” or maybe you’re in inquisitive one.

Is that just breaking up the awkward silence or is it a insight to what they are actually thinking?
