Every time I read about the most frustrating aspects of online dating, people are like, "but that's just the reality of it right now."
What's incredibly terrible about this take is that "the reality of online dating right now" is that we sign up willingly to be discouraged, disappointed, emotionally exhausted, misled, verbally abused, ghosted, catfished, made to feel lesser than, made to feel like you're not good enough, made to feel like you're ignored, and unwanted. The cons of online dating right now completely pile onto and bury any of the potential good that could come out of using them at this stage. There's no returning from how bad it is, and yet, we shrug our shoulders as it gets worse, and just say, "But that's just the reality of online dating right now"
Who is having any luck out there in online dating, really? It seems to me like the only people who are having a blast with online dating are the worst personalities, the superficial, and deceptive people on these apps who make it such a horrible time. Somehow, for some strange reason, they're the only ones who ultimately find happiness in it through a relationship, casually dating, or hookups -- all at the expense of those with actual honest to goodness positive intentions.
The next time you say that this is just the reality of what online dating is right now, know that what you mean is that we're just continuosly justifying people getting worse and worse in how they treat others.
