Fellow unattractive people, how do you work up the courage?

Hello everyone, I am a fellow at the age of 27 looking for some useful advice. This is somewhat awkward and embarrassing to talk about but I have never been in a relationship before. I have had drunken sex at the rare party but nothing beyond that unfortunately. However it's not like I haven't asked people out before and they weren't just random women but to people who I felt like I had chemistry with. Each time it has resulted in the cliche response "I would prefer if we stayed friends" and each time I would hear this I would become more of a recluse in terms of dating.

Not trying to give the impression of a sob story but I would consider myself a bit unattractive. Granted some of this is my fault and some of it is genetic. For example, I am a little overweight and that's something I am currently working on. On the genetic side of things, I have a large birthmark on my cheek and I am almost completely grey. I have considered dying my hair but I don't have the time or the money to dye it every month.

How do I go about this? dating become such a foreign and terrifying concept to me...
