Where is the line between emotional intimacy and exclusivity?

I’m (F30s) sure everyone’s lines are defined differently, I'd really like to get feedback from others perspectives on the following:

How much do you invest and allow yourself to become close to someone before your need for exclusivity arises? Do you keep it easy and casual before making that commitment, or do you allow yourself to get close and be a bit vulnerable?

Follow up question: what do you do if the person you’re talking to isn’t ready for exclusivity when you are? Do you politely walk away for your own sake, try to dial things back to a level you’re comfortable with, or are you comfortable keeping the status quo until they’ve made a decision?
