My friends say I should get to know girls before asking them out

I’m 15 if this means anything and usually when I see a pretty girl I usually go up to them and talk to them with a short sentence, introduce myself if they don’t know me ask them about a current situation and then ask them out. I thought the purpose of a date was to get to know the person?
