I (18M) want to ask a girl (18F) out, but don't know if she has a boyfriend/girlfriend.

Do I just... ask? And then get rejected if she does, and then potentially not rejected if she doesn't?
Because I feel like saying "Hey, do you have a boyfriend?" isn't the most... tactful way of going about things. I could be wrong. Might be the best way. Any advice?
Yes, she is a friend of mine, but we don't get to see each other daily or anything (we go to different colleges about 45-60 minutes away).
