I work in cyber sec, is that just a turn off my default?

I (M29) work a pretty cool job in cyber. The problem is because of security clauses I can't really talk about it. I make a decent living. In my spare time I like to just hack shit and research to keep me interested.

Is this just a default turn off? I feel being a computer nerd essentially cuts out like 95% of the population. I'm not charismatic, but I'm sure as shit not an awkward nerd. I just seem to not be able to get past the "what do you do for a living" without conversations dying afterwards.

Any tips? Or is being a nerd kinda rough in general
