I (21m) have been working in an internship this summer, and one of the interns in another department (21f) is someone who I've taken a lot of interest in. We normally get lunch a couple times a week with a couple other interns, and often sit in on conference calls together (just us two) a couple times a week, but have never done anything out of work as just the two of us. We obviously enjoy each other enough to hang out at work when possible, but I am not sure how I might go about trying to take it a bit further, or at least test the waters.
My worry is that I am more of just a friend out of the convenience of us being in the same program, and that she might not reciprocate my romantic interest. It is also a bit touchy just because we do work on the same floor (though in completely separate departments), and likely will both return full time next year. This makes me cautious of misreading the situation and creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for both of us.
I guess my question would be how should I go about testing the waters further to see if she might be interested in an actual date of some sort? Maybe a way to get just the two of us together outside work so that we can see what a more casual date would look like, but not be so straight forward yet as asking her out? I am very comfortable with girls, yet very timid about making things uncomfortable or awkward, so am just kinda stuck in a circle of being friendly at work, too scared to act.
