Should I try to date my best friend long distance

So I met 'Ben' about 9 years ago through a mutual friend that introduced us. We were both moving to the sane new town and she suggested we live together as the cost of living there was high. We hit it off and continued to live together for about five years. We had other housemates and there was always a rule of not sleeping with housemates as this causes drama. Eventually we both moved to different cities but remained close friends. I visited him last may in Florida where I had many friends with the intention of bouncing around but there was so much chemistry between us I ended up spending my entire vacation with him. We briefly talked about dating and kissed a few times but after the timing was bad as I was living across the country and starting school. Fast forward to now, I have moved closer to him and have a year left of school. Still in different states but airports are more accessible and I know what my life in school will be like. The chemistry is there and we have been kissing & cuddling but not sex. I am open to trying a long distance relationship with him but this time he hasn't brought it up. I am curious if I should just take it easy and not bring anything up or if I should bring up my concerns that casual sec with him might change things? Thank you for reading this super long post. Any advice or feedback is welcome.
