Perhaps the simplest, but not the easiest way to keep a relationship is:
- Be truly interested in the other person.
- Show your interest by asking them questions about themselves.
- Listen, truly listen, to what they are saying, even if you disagree.
- Validate that "It makes sense you would feels this way."
That's it. You know about yourself and pushing your great accomplishments doesn't get you closer. It often pushes them away. Over time they will be interested in you and ask you questions. Your answers should be truthful, but don't go on too long.
My wife and I have worked in therapy with hundreds of couples and found the above is a great start to a long-term relationship.
