“Word association” is a basic function in our minds for most of us. If we hear the word “mom,” we immediately picture OUR mom. If we hear “dad,” we immediately picture OUR dad. And in the heat of passion with a woman - or anything else involving her for that matter - the last thing I want is saying her name and having my sister pop into my head!
I’ve discovered through dating apps that roughly half of women are named Sarah, Nikki, Katie, Molly, or Emily. Seriously, it’s ridiculous. (Two of those names are my sisters and one is a very significant ex that I should have married and it’s been very painful.) Surprisingly, there’s waaaaaay fewer Ashleys and Heathers out there than one might cynically think.
To be fair, my parents are to blame for having no imagination whatsoever when naming their daughters. And I mostly get along with my sisters. But even the most fleeting thought of anything incestual is repulsive.
This has been an immediate dealbreaker with countless compatible and very attractive women on whom I’ve swiped left. I just can’t get my mind around this hangup. Does anyone else have this issue? What does one do with so many women whose mere names ruin intimacy and everything else wonderful about a relationship?
I’m 36, btw.
