I (32m) recently started dating a 22 year old. Now, a bit of internet searching in every single post about something like that says its a huge red flag for the guy, that he's trying to use the in-balance in power dynamic to control her or something like that. In this situation she instigated at all levels and pursued the relationship, it wasn't primarily my doing.
The relationship dynamic is unusual to one of closer aged couples in that she wants my opinion and help on everything. She likes that I know how to do things she doesn't, so I can see were that power imbalance comes from in some. But I've been actively trying to help her do everything in her best interest, not mine. Encouraging her to keep in touch with her friends, focus on her education as opposed to paying attention to me etc etc. I'd like it to be viewed as a positive relationship in her life, even if it doesn't last that long.
What type of actions should you take to avoid becoming one of those red flag situations that reddit always warns about?
