Does she need space or is trying to let me down easy?

Quick disclaimer: I’m well aware that the majority of people on this Reddit have way bigger problems than mine so if you think I’m being a stupid teenager please tell me.

I (18M) met this girl (19F) about a month ago on a night out, we hit it off straight away, kissed and I got her number. We were talking a lot every day, having great conversations. Unfortunately she lives on a different campus to me (I go to university in the uk) so I don’t get to see her around and about.

One night out I end up going back to hers and stay over. At this point I’m feeling amazing about this girl. She’s the first girl I’ve met that it’s more than just a physical attraction that disappeared after I got her in bed.

I wake up to a text from her later that day saying that she enjoyed our night but isn’t in a place to be involved with anyone seriously or casually. Initially I felt so confused. She didn’t word her first text very well and I thought I was some how getting broken up with with someone that wasn’t even my gf. She explained what she meant and as I said she told me she didn’t want to be involved with anyone. I told her that I did like her but would respect that and give her space to sort her stuff out. To make things more confusing she told one of my mates that she really liked me earlier this week??

My plan is to not text her and just talk to her if I see her in person. I told myself I didn’t want a gf in my first year of university unless I met someone incredible, I think it’s her.
