My boyfriend (28 M) and I (25 F) have been talking a lot about our future. We know that we want to get marry and have kids one day. We are currently renting right outside of NYC for $2100, expensive I know. We are very serious about saving up for a house. My boyfriend make over a 100k and I make 55k. I only started working a year ago and saved over $30,000. Our plan is to rent for at least another year but I’m a little worried that I won’t be able to save up as much as he does. After rent, my car payment and my student loans, I only have about $1000 left so my saving grow slowly. I only have about a year left before we start looking for house. Obviously he make a lot more than I do so it would make sense that he able to save a lot more and a lot faster. He said he would put the down payment but I like to keep everything half and half. I think men and women are equal and if this house is mine I should contribute just as much. My boyfriend said don’t worry about it. In fact he won’t even mind if I quit my job when we have kids. But in my mind I’m a little stressed between wedding cost, a house and whatever is in the future. I like to contribute my part but with 55k income in NJ is very hard to do since the cost of living here is just keep going up. I’m wondering how other people feel about this? What are your situations like? Also how do you feel about combine finances when you are marry? I’m very conscious when it’s come to money. I watch my account like a hawk so the idea of having a joint account and have someone support me is odd.
