Double text or just leave it alone?

A guy (27) I used to work with asked me out a while back to “come over and watch a movie” for a first date. At the time, we had only worked one 8 hour shift together and barely spoke unless I initiated conversation, so I was surprised he even asked. He also had just been broken up with his girlfriend who was his first real relationship that lasted 3 months and the woman he was planning to have a child with about 3 days before asking me out.

He said he was shocked I didn’t reach out to him after that (I didn’t because I didn’t really know him), and when I declined coming to his house because I wanted to take things slow, he said “we’ll see” and stopped contacting me. A month later we saw each other again at work and he asked for a hug, but also said he didn’t want to be “cool” with me because I rejected him.

Fast forward over a year of no contact.
Last night at around 9:40pm, he randomly texted me “hey what’s up.” I didn’t recognize the number at first so I looked it up and realized it was him. I replied “Hey ?” because I was trying to figure out who it was, not because I was questioning why he texted.

Now he hasn’t replied and I’m overthinking it. I’m wondering:

Did my “Hey ?” come off wrong or like I didn’t want him texting me?

Was this just a casual “booty call” type of text or just a random check-in?

Should I even follow up or just leave it alone?
I also feel like I might be overthinking because the original context of him asking me out was also kind of questionable (first “date” was his house).
