Long story short, I am a complete and total nerd. I have virtually no interest in anything outside of STEM and finance. Most people think I just do these things for work and have other pastimes on the side. But nope. I live and breathe this stuff. My 'hobbies' are things like engineering projects, math, backyard chemistry, etc. I tend to tune out anything outside of this realm.
It's incredibly difficult to talk to people due to my lack of common knowledge. I couldn't name 10 modern celebrities off the top of my head even if I tried. I don't know who won the super bowl. I've never watched a TV show in my life. I don't know a whole lot about politics or current events either. The list goes on.
And every time I mention this, the advice is typically along the lines of "find a normal hobby" or "learn about popular culture." But I feel that if I do those things, I am trying to adjust myself artificially to be more appealing to someone who isn't compatible anyway...
What's worse is that there are very few women that are interested in what I am. Both the professional and amateur STEM communities are overwhelmingly dominated by men. I have been to science and engineering conventions before and they are easily 85-90% male. And the few women that are there are almost always either already in a relationship or uninterested in one.
So it's looking like my only options are to begrudgingly learn about 'normal' topics and put on a fake mask to attract a 'normal' woman, or die alone as a single nerd.
Any other mega-nerds have experience?
