My boyfriend (20M) and I (20F) have been together for about two years now. Recently, he accused me of using him for his money. He never lets me pay for anything because he insists that’s his role, so hearing that really shocked me. I was honestly stunned.
For context, I sometimes buy him things he needs because he won’t let me contribute in other ways, but there’s never really been any issue about money between us before this. We also had a small, kind of stupid argument earlier that day, and this was the first time he ever said something like this.
When I told him how much it hurt me, he said he was just joking, but his expression didn’t really match his words. He looked serious, and now I can’t help but wonder if he actually meant it.
It really hurt because I would never use him for money, and it’s painful to think he might see me that way.
I don’t really know how to feel about this or how to bring it up again without making things worse.
Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Do you think this was just a badly timed joke after an argument, or something more concerning? And how would you bring it up again without it turning into a fight?
